Why Ivermectin is Called the Wonder Drug?
In 1975, workers at Merck laboratories received 54 samples from Japan including some soil samples obtained from a golf course, one of which contained a factor with significant antiparasitic effects. The new compound was called Ivermectin and marketed under the name Mectizan. It was used for animal health in 1981 and soon became a top-selling veterinary medication in the world.
Ivermectin was approved for human use in France in 1987. Since then, more than 5.7 billion doses have been distributed globally.
It is listed as an essential medication by WHO and has been called a “wonder drug”. In 2015, William Campbell and Satoshi Ōmura were awarded a joint Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery and development of ivermectin.
As of 2020, Ivermectin tablets were the cheapest head lice treatment option in Germany at about 6 euros per tablet.
Beginning in 2021, Ivermectin became available in pharmacies as a generic, which means it is cheaper than the branded version. The average retail price of generic ivermectin in Germany is 50 euros for 10 3 mg tablets.
If you buy the drug online, you can reduce the price even further. Our pharmacy offers a pack of 10 tablets (3 mg) of ivermectin for €34. Stromectol 12 mg 90 tablets is also very popular - in this case the price per tablet is €4.78. Ivermectin is an oral drug approved in France for the treatment of certain parasitic infections (e.g. strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis). In vitro data have demonstrated that ivermectin has antiviral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and can prevent viral proteins from binding to and entering cells. Ivermectin is currently not recommended for prophylaxis or treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as current evidence does not show clinical benefit.
It is important to note that the primary and approved use of ivermectin is as an antiparasitic agent. One parasite of interest is Strongyloides stercoralis. Strongyloides infection ranges in presentation from asymptomatic intestinal infection to hyperinfection and severe disseminated disease. Patients with chronic asymptomatic S. stercoralis infection and impaired immunity may develop "accelerated auto-infection", known as hyperinfection. These patients may also experience disseminated disease secondary to larval migration outside their usual anatomic reservoir, with varying presentations (e.g. pneumonia, central nervous system infection, recurrent gram-negative or polymicrobial bacteremia and sepsis). Immunosuppression, in particular corticosteroid use, has been associated with increased risk of hyperinfection syndrome in patients with chronic Strongyloides infection.
Ivermectin is an essential medication for treatment of strongyloidiasis and scabies. Shortages Canada, with only limited quantities available due to increased demand for the drug. Therefore, clinicians are currently encouraged to use ivermectin only when necessary for evidence-based clinical indications, and may need to be prepared to consider using substitute agents if ivermectin becomes locally unavailable. In this brief review, we discuss the application of existing Strongyloides screening recommendations to patients with COVID-19, and suggested Strongyloides treatment strategies to preserve ivermectin supply while ensuring appropriate treatment for patients with COVID-19 at risk for hyperinfection.

In Vitro Study from Monash University
In April 2020, Australian researchers reported that ivermectin slowed the replication of the novel coronavirus in mammalian cells.
The scientists infected the cells with SARS-Cov-2 in a test tube, added ivermectin, and found that within 24 hours, the amount of viral RNA had been reduced by 93%. By 48 hours, essentially all viral material was eradicated.
But they used a dosage that was so high it may have dangerous side effects in people. Still, even at lower doses, the researchers indicated that ivermectin had the potential to inhibit the replication of the virus in the body.
Some side effects that may be associated with ivermectin include:
Some of these side effects are likely a reaction to the parasite (worm or mite) dying. The side effects are usually temporary.
